The beef industry is environmentally unsustainable and cattle suffer immensely from numerous animal welfare issues. We urge the government to end all subsidies for the beef industry, and instead support more sustainable and ethical alternatives. We need policies that will help rapidly reduce Australia's cattle herd and start to repair some of the environmental damage that has been done. Instead of using more than half the continent to graze beef cattle, we should be 're-wilding' the landscape and helping graziers transition to more sustainable industries. Re-wilding grazing lands offers the most effective, lowest cost, large scale, natural mitigation solution. Australia is also well-placed to be a leader in the rapidly growing alternative protein market with the right government support.
